History Unfolds During the Spirit of Gettysburg 5K
Published May 27, 2011
About 1,000 runners will travel the first day of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg during the 21st Annual Spirit of Gettysburg 5K on June 25.
The Spirit of Gettysburg is hosted by the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County and is considered a premiere running event.
“Having run 18 or 19 of the 20 offered, I am always pleased with the organization, refreshments, relief stations, etc. that you have for this run. And you generally get good weather,” Leroy Keeney of York said after the 2010 Spirit of Gettysburg.
The Spirit of Gettysburg is much more than your average 5K. It passes the beautiful Eternal Light Peace Memorial and cash prizes are awarded to the top finishers. Those who place in the top three spots in their respective age group will receive a beautiful ceramic mug with the 2011 Spirit of Gettysburg logo.
There is also something for the entire family. In addition to the 5K, the Spirit of Gettysburg offers a 5K Wheelchair Race, 1-mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk, Kids’ 1-mile Run, Kids’ ¼ mile sprint and mini trot.
Those who want to register for any of the events can do so at www.active.com or by downloading an application at www.ywcagettysburg.org and mailing it to the YWCA, 909 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg. Questions can be directed to Alex J. Hayes at 334-9171, ext. 116 or ahayes@ywcagettysburg.org.
All proceeds from the event benefit the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County’s programs in aquatics, Road Scholar Adventures in Lifelong Learning, sports and fitness, childcare, racial justice and women’s empowerment.
