Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival August 18-21
Published August 15, 2011
This Thursday, August 18th, marks the 63rd semi-annual Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival! I wrote a blog post about their May Festival here.
Twice per year bluegrass fans and musicians from across the world come to Granite Hill Camping Resort for this 4 day festival! The Evening Sun wrote a great article about this upcoming festival that will close out 2011.Here is an excerpt from the Evening Sun article:
The festival prides itself on giving the audience variety — something for traditional and progressive bluegrass fans alike, said the festival and campground owner Rich Winklemann.
“We have such a strength in our lineup that you can afford to take a chance here and there,” he said. “We do our homework and we vet acts as best we can either by checking them out or getting demos of getting inside-industry word.”
And the musicians who appear on the main stage also find their way to the big blue workshop tent nearby to lead instructional sessions with their fans.
The workshops, coordinated each year by Mike and Gay Henderson, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., are held from Thursday through Saturday and are free to all festival participants.
The topics of the sessions focus on everything from songwriting to jamming and instrumentation on the primary acoustic instruments used in bluegrass. The tent also serves as the site of the popular “All Star Jam,” a jam session that brings together members of different bands performing at Gettysburg.
